Are religious actors the missing link in effective localization efforts?

The study, commissioned by Islamic Relief Worldwide, examines and analyses the unique contributions and challenges faced by religious actors in humanitarian organizations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Palestine and Mozambique.

Our findings show that, contrary to popular misconceptions, most religious actors are not missionary in nature and their values are closely aligned with humanitarian principles. They play a crucial role in providing mental health and psychosocial support, particularly in crisis situations, where they promote community solidarity and resilience. However, despite their potential, religious actors often face significant obstacles such as limited funding, structural challenges and cultural misunderstandings that prevent their full engagement.

What does the report offer?

  • In addition to data and analysis, the report includes:
  • Debunks widespread myths about religious actors
