I don’t think Bridgerton Season 3 did the book justice

I don’t think Bridgerton Season 3 did the book justice

Summary

  • Season 3 of Bridgerton received high ratings but fell short of the book version, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
  • The characters Colin and Penelope were not well developed in the series compared to the book, which caused problems.
  • Despite some flaws, Bridgerton season three still had standout moments and potential for future character development.

I don’t believe Bridgerton Season 3 did justice to its book counterpart, A romance with Mr. BridgertonThe season boasts impressive numbers, including being ranked on the list of Netflix’s most-watched shows of all time in less than three months. Rotten Tomatoes gave the season an 87%, while the audience score was 76%, the highest of all three seasons. I really enjoyed itBridgerton Season 3, but I have noticed a few problems with it, such as the surprising focus on Cressida Cowper. However, I still consider it one of my favorites because of the intriguing subplots and family dynamics.

However, when I think about it, Bridgerton the book counterpart to the third season, A romance with Mr. BridgertonI always find further reviews of the adaptation. The reveal of Lady Whistledown was disappointing; Anthony and Kate’s limited screen time was disappointing, despite their crucial role in the reveal. Colin proposed to Penelope before learning of her identity as Lady Whistledown, which I really disliked. But there was one aspect to Bridgerton Season 3 finally made me realize that while I enjoyed the season, it didn’t live up to the expectations the book had created.

The problem with Colin and Penelope from Bridgerton

Colin and Penelope are not as well written as their counterparts in the book

Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton and Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington dance in Bridgerton Season 3

Bridgerton Season 3 reminded me of a crucial fact: the characterizations of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington in the series fell flat. While Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton are perfect for the roles, the characteristics they display in the series do not match what is established in the book. For the most part Bridgerton does an excellent job with the characterswhich makes her even more captivating than in the original. Marina Thompson is a fully developed character and not just a plot device used to demonize mental illness. Bridgerton Kate Sharma was much improved compared to the books, deepening the dynamic between Kate and her family as well as her relationship with Anthony.

Even Anthony was not sympathetic in The Viscount who loved meBut Bridgerton gave him the development he needed to become a fan favorite. Bridgerton didn’t do as much with Penelope and Colin as it could have. In the series, Colin has no personality outside of Penelope. The series ignored his story arc and made it seem like it was just Penelope’s story, even though Colin and Penelope both have compelling story arcs in A romance with Mr. Bridgerton. Penelope is more intelligent and attentive in the books, but above all she criticizes the ton without using Lady Whistledown as a weapon for her personal gain.

Bridgerton Season 3 Could Never Be As Good As Romancing Mr. Bridgerton

The characterizations of Colin and Penelope in previous seasons had to be corrected

Colin and Penelope stare intensely at each other at a ball in Bridgerton

Unfortunately, Bridgerton Season 3 was never as good as A romance with Mr. Bridgerton because the narrative cemented the characterizations of Colin and Penelope in the first two seasons. The series portrayed Penelope as a shy wallflower searching for her voice, which was true to the books, but she was also portrayed as a jealous and mean person, something her counterpart in the book was not. In fact, the books have commented on this issue, with one passage suggesting that it would be mischaracterized as “mean, petty and jealous” if Penelope’s identity as Lady Whistledown was revealed.

Bridgerton Penelope actually turns into someone”mean, petty and jealous” defeats the purpose of her character, meaning the show had to fix Penelope so the audience could find her likable enough to cheer for her. As for Colin, the first two seasons did not give him a deep personality. In the books, Colin is funny and charming; he always knows how to cheer someone up, and he is empathetic. However, his counterpart in the series displayed none of these qualities.

Bridgerton can’t take Colin and Penelope back to where they started and tell their love story at the same time. However, the series tried to do both, effectively rushing their romance and making it less compelling than in Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.

This is demonstrated by the idea that Bridgerton had to spend a large part of the third season establishing Colin’s character and turning Penelope into someone we could root for. A romance with Mr. Bridgerton had already established the personalities of Colin and Penelopeso that the actual narrative focused on their relationship and further character development. Bridgerton cannot effectively return Colin and Penelope to where they started and tell their love story at the same time. However, the show tried to do both, which effectively rushed their romance and made it less compelling than in A romance with Mr. Bridgerton.

Season 3 saved Colin and Penelope for future Bridgerton seasons

There is more potential for the individual characters of Colin and Penelope

Although Bridgerton Season 3 did not meet my expectations, but the season ended with the hope that leaves room for further character development. Now that Penelope is writing under her own name, she can hold herself accountable and learn how to criticize high society without using her column as a weapon. In addition, Colin and Penelope’s happy ending also means that Colin can have an individual storyline that focuses on his career as an author. Although future Bridgerton They are not the focus of any of the seasons; there are always subplots that create the opportunity for further character development for Colin and Penelope.

Bridgerton
Season 3 ended with Colin and Penelope embracing their son, but in the books their firstborn is a girl named Agatha, after Lady Danbury.

Despite these problems Bridgerton Season 3 is still a favorite. The show some scenes with Colin and Penelope really well implementedlike the mirror scene, which was better than I expected. I also loved Benedict’s exploration of sexuality and Francesca and John’s story, which we didn’t get to know in the books. Michaela Stirling’s introduction was unexpected, but I loved the change. The best thing about Bridgerton Season 3 was all about Penelope and Eloise reconciling. Their relationship was the heart of the season and I look forward to their new and better friendship in the coming seasons.
