Sam Rubin’s cause of death confirmed by LA County coroner

(KTLA) – Sam Rubin, the popular entertainment host on Nexstar’s KTLA, has died of a heart attack secondary to coronary artery disease, the Los Angeles County coroner confirmed Tuesday.

Rubin, 64, went to the hospital with stomach pains on the morning of May 10 after calling 911. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room shortly after 11 a.m.

In its report, the medical examiner’s office stated that Rubin suffered from “ischemic heart disease due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.”

His heart stopped due to a lack of blood and oxygen. The cause of death was “natural,” said the coroner.

A full autopsy report is expected to be released by the end of the week.

Ischemic heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, affecting approximately 126 million people, according to the National Institutes of Health. Symptoms include chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and swollen feet and ankles.

Rubin joined KTLA in 1991 and quickly rose to prominence as one of the country’s leading local journalists. His extensive knowledge of film and television, coupled with his close connections in the industry, made him a celebrity among celebrities in the entertainment capital of the world.

Rubin’s sudden death was mourned by millions of Los Angeles residents as well as television viewers across the country and around the world.

Rubin leaves behind his wife Leslie and his children Perry, Rory, Darcy and Colby.
