Joe Bonsall announced his withdrawal from the tour at the beginning of the year.

Joe Bonsall, tenor singer of the Oak Ridge Boys, has died at the age of 76.

Bonsall died yesterday (July 9) from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (motor neuron disease).

The news of his death was announced with the publication of his obituary on the Oak Ridge Boys’ social media channels.

“Joseph S. Bonsall, 76, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, passed away on July 9, 2024 from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,” it said.

“A member of the American musical group The Oak Ridge Boys for 50 years, Joe was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame.”

It continues: “Joe loved to sing. He loved to read. He loved to write. He loved to play the banjo. He loved to work on the farm. And he loved the Philadelphia Phillies.”

“But Jesus and his family always came first – and we will see him again on the Promised Day.”

Per Joe’s wishes, there will be no funeral and the family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the ALS Association or the Vanderbilt Medical Center ALS and Neuroscience Research Center.

The Oak Ridge Boys – Elvira (Live)

The Oak Ridge Boys were a country and gospel quartet that formed in 1943 as the Oak Ridge Quartet.

They went through a changing line-up, their best known line-up consisted of Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban and Joe Bonsall.

For health reasons, Bonsall retired from performing in January of this year and was replaced as tenor singer by Ben James.
