Rumor has it that Apple is preparing a Face ID overhaul for the iPhone 16 series

It is only a matter of weeks until Apple unveils the upcoming iPhone 16 series at its usual fall event.

According to a recent report by DigiTimesApple is preparing notable changes to the iPhone 16’s Face ID mechanism. It cites an original report from The Telegraph The company reported in May on Apple’s decision to part ways with Coherent, a UK-based supplier, which caused a ripple effect. Coherent is now reportedly considering selling its UK manufacturing facility.

Little is known about the exact changes to the Face ID mechanism of the iPhone 16 series. It is believed that Apple could rework the Face ID mechanism and make the module significantly smaller. This could allow Apple to reduce the size of Dynamic Island.

Previous leaks suggested that the Pro models could come with new under-display sensors, but industry analysts like Ross Young refuted these rumors. Young had previously said it wouldn’t launch before 2025, but later corrected that he expects under-screen Face ID by 2026 at the latest.

However, how Apple plans to revamp the Face ID mechanism with the iPhone 16 series remains a secret, but with the release just a few weeks away, we’ll likely hear more about it in the coming weeks.

So far, CAD renders and other leaks have suggested that there are pretty much no differences between the current iPhone 15 series and the upcoming iPhone 16 series. The only notable differences are slightly larger screens on the iPhone 16 Pro series and rumors of a new record button on the Pro variants, so it would be interesting to see what Apple is secretly cooking up.
