The eight-part Spider-Man Noir series will air on Amazon MGM and stars Brendan Gleeson as the main villain

Amazon’s highly anticipated Spider-Man Noir The series has confirmed an eight-episode run and announced that Brendan Gleeson will join the cast as the main villain. Gleeson will star alongside Nicolas Cage, who was previously announced as the series’ lead, and Lamorne Morris, who was recently cast.

The series entitled Spider Noirwas officially ordered in May and will premiere domestically on MGM+ before becoming available worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.

Spider Noir Set in 1930s New York, the film follows an ageing, down-on-his-luck private investigator, played by Cage, as he grapples with his past life as the city’s only superhero. While details about Gleeson’s character remain under wraps, it is confirmed that he will play the series’ antagonist.

This casting news follows Gleeson’s acclaimed performance in The Banshees of Inisherinfor which he received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. His TV credits include the crime drama Mr Mercedesbased on Stephen King’s novels by Bill Hodges, and the Showtime miniseries The Comey Rulewhere he portrayed President Donald Trump. Gleeson also won an Emmy in 2009 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the television movie Into the stormIn film, Gleeson is also known for his roles in In Bruges, The Guard, CalvaryThe Harry Potter Franchise, Brave heartAnd Criminal organizations of New York.

Spider Noir is the brainchild of Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. The series is produced in association with Into the Spider-Verse Team of Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal, all of whom are also executive producers. Harry Bradbeer will direct the first two episodes and serve as executive producer. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, with Lord and Miller currently under an overall deal with Sony.

This series is the second project announced as part of the partnership between Amazon and Sony to develop Marvel character projects related to Spider-Man, which Sony controls. The first, Silk: Spider Societywas originally given the green light for 2022, but will not be pursued further by Amazon.

In an interview with The New YorkerCage spoke about his approach to the unique take on Spider-Man, emphasizing his desire to give the character a Golden Age aura and embrace the enigmatic nature of Spider-Man Noir. Cage’s signature larger-than-life performances and mysterious screen presence are expected to add to the character’s depth and intrigue.

Cage described the live action Spider-Man Noir He described the television series as a “pop art mashup, like a Lichtenstein painting,” adding that it will have “some sparkle.”
