KTLA journalist Sam RubinThe cause of death was announced two months after the popular entertainment reporter died at the age of 64.

Rubin died of “ischemic heart disease due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (fatal heart attack due to lack of blood and oxygen to the heart),” the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday, July 9. “This is a natural death.”

According to the coroner’s office, Rubin was admitted to a local hospital on May 10 with stomach pains. He was pronounced dead at 11:03 a.m. local time.

Rubin’s death was announced by KTLA, where he had worked since 1991.

“KTLA 5 is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Sam Rubin,” the station wrote about X. “Sam was a giant in the local news and entertainment world and a fixture on Los Angeles morning television for decades. His laugh, charm and caring personality touched all who knew him.”

The post ended with the words: “Sam was a loving husband and father: the roles he cherished most. Our thoughts are with Sam’s family during this difficult time.”

KTLA’s Frank Buckley broke the news of Rubin’s death live on air, calling it “shocking” and “difficult to comprehend.”

“Our hearts are broken, as you can imagine,” Buckley said. “Quite simply, Sam was KTLA.”

Buckley was overwhelmed when he spoke of Rubin’s “laugh, his charm, his caring personality.”

Colleagues and celebrities paid tribute to Rubin following news of his death in May.

“I am speechless and shocked by the news of the death of my friend Sam Rubin,” Heroines Actor Greg Grunberg wrote about X. “He cared about everyone he met and always took the time to smile and ask about his family. He was the best at what he did. I can’t believe this news. So devastating and sad. Thinking of his wonderful family.”

Bridesmaids Director Paul Feig wrote of X: “I really loved Sam, he was so supportive of me and the industry in general. He was the best. I still can’t quite get over his death. Sending so much love to his family and friends. So sad. Rest in peace Sam. Love you buddy.”

Rubin leaves behind his wife Leslie and four children.
