The 10-part series from showrunner Clyde Phillips follows Dexter in 1991 Miami as he tries to control his urge to kill and confides in Harry. His father teaches him the code he will later live by, teaching him how to kill those who deserve death and manage to get away with it.

This proves particularly challenging when Dexter begins an internship in forensics at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Dexter: Original Sin follows limited series Dexter – New Bloodwhich was also produced by Phillips and ends with a huge twist in which Dexter is killed by his own son, Harrison.

“We needed him (to die), I think,” Phillips told Rotten tomatoes by the time.

“Dexter is an antihero, so (still) a hero we like, but he’s still psychotic. And he kills people, and you’re not supposed to kill people.”

“So in some ways it’s just what had to happen. And as far as the specifics of the method of how it happened, that evolved in the writers’ room. We had great writers and it’s what we call ‘the best idea wins.'”

Dexter: Original Sin airs on Showtime in the US and Paramount+ in the UK. Dexter And Dexter – New Blood are both available to stream on NOW.
