Action Comics #1067 Review

Action Comics #1067 Review

DC’s Superman Superstars initiative starts a new story arc this week in Action Comics #1067. At the helm are Gail Simone and Eddy Barrows, with support from Rainbow Rowell and Cian Tormey. To say that Simone is one of the hottest authors at the moment would be an understatement, as she is Uncanny X-Men this summer, but first a Superman story from the past!

The main story begins with Clark, Jimmy and Lois out on patrol with a camera and microphone in tow. They do a report on a youth center that is closing down, but before he can finish his questioning, Lois has a surprise and takes over. From here to the cheerful Jimmy and the somewhat shy Clark, Simone nails the characterization perfectly.

If you’re expecting a slow-paced crime thriller, you’ll be surprised to learn that aliens descend on Earth shortly after the opening scene. Superman soon faces a difficult choice: the death of the entire Earth or its enslavement. Simone has raised the stakes right from the start, and the cliffhanger will take your breath away.

Barrows delivers artistic excellence, with a superb, spectacular appearance by Superman, complete with the old-fashioned S logo. The aliens are monstrous and the scale is well rendered.

The main story also captures the early days of Superman well without coming across as too dated. Lois certainly wears an outfit that isn’t modern and Clark wears the old-fashioned hat, but it ends up coming across as more endearing than a period piece. Still, I was wondering if this is canon or some sort of Elseworlds story. You may be wondering, like me, when this fits into canon.

The backstory is great too, focusing on the new dynamic between Clark the reporter and Lois the editor in chief. Lois is feeling the pressure of the job while Clark is as supportive as ever. It’s a very adult dynamic at work that is taken to the extreme when Clark’s life as Superman and reporter becomes a problem. It’s honestly a question I’ve asked myself before, and now that Lois is editor in chief, she calls him out on it.

Tormey’s background is excellent, with clean lines and an unmistakable vibrancy in the body language. Tormey is very good at breaking up dialogue-heavy scenes and making them look interesting. This is especially difficult in a scene that could become boring. Instead, there are great medium to wide shots mixed with close-ups and interesting angles of the office to keep you interested.

The main story recalls earlier times for Superman and Lois, while the side story takes the relationship between an editor and his writer to a new level in the roles of Clark and Lois. Action Comics #1067 has the commitment and heart that make Superman comics great.

The main story is very exciting

Nice old-school dynamic in the main story with a more current backstory

Unclear if the main story is canon or when it takes place
