The cause of death of late night news anchor Sam Rubin, the veteran entertainment reporter who died in May, has been announced.

The KTLA news anchor died of ischemic heart disease, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease was listed as a secondary cause.

It was assumed that the cause of death was natural.

According to the nonprofit health system Advocate Health Care, ischemic heart disease is a weakening of the heart due to reduced blood flow. The disease can increase the risk of blood clots, heart valve disease, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythm, among other problems.

Atherosclerosis occurs when a person’s arteries harden due to plaque buildup, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The condition can “limit or block blood flow to various parts of your body, including your heart and brain,” and potential complications include coronary artery disease, heart failure, heart attack, chronic kidney disease and stroke.

Rubin died on May 10 at the age of 64. As KTLA began its 1 p.m. newscast, a group of news anchors announced the death of their colleague.

“The station is filled with great sadness,” said presenter Frank Buckley at the time. “(Rubin) was here yesterday and called in sick. We heard the news this afternoon.”

“We don’t know exactly what happened, but we know it was sudden because he was here yesterday. A little over 24 hours ago we were sitting on this set with him,” Buckley added.
