Skylar Blatt became famous, but then Chris Brown gave her a feature

Even though this is the pinnacle of Skylar Blatt’s career, she has already received something like a Grammy.

The Ohio rapper landed a performance with Chris Brown on “Wake Up.” Brown reportedly suggested she film the video at his home so she wouldn’t have to pay for production costs out of her own pocket.

On June 14, Blatt came by Roll out to discuss the opportunity and her career.

What’s it like to have a mainstream hit single now?

It’s incredible. This is what I’ve been working towards. And now to see it pay off, it makes me that much hungrier. As an artist, you think, “I’m that girl. I’m the one.” You already knew it, but the world didn’t. Now that the world knows it, you say, “Okay. Let’s go for it.” And that’s just the beginning.

What do you remember from the first day your “From The Block” performance went viral?

I’m not going to lie, it was crazy.

I’m not kidding, my engineer and I were all on the same page about my next release. I didn’t want to put out “Fame” at the time. That wasn’t the record I wanted to put out. It was crazy; my engineer was like, “Nah, put that one out.”

I was in my melodic element at the time and I didn’t want to release “Fame.” He was like, “I’m telling you, put this out.” I was listening to one of my friends… I was like, “OK. Do you think we should put this out?” Me, him, and a couple of other guys on my team were there. We just said, “OK. Let’s put this out and see what you think. Try it. You might be right.”

Seeing it go crazy was crazy because it wasn’t one of my favorite records. But that’s the way it is. So it was cool.

Chris Brown posted “Fame” on his story. How was that?

That was next level; I’m not going to lie. That was a different feeling. Just the fact that it was reposted, I was like, “Damn. Seriously?”

I knew all the work I had put in was starting to pay off. I felt it. Sometimes you don’t feel it when you’re working so hard and things aren’t going the way you want them to or the way you thought they would. Then you’re like, “All right, man. I’m starting to get a little frustrated.” But when that happened, it was just like, “OK. Let me calm down a little bit. You’re doing what you’re supposed to do. Just keep doing what you’re doing.”

What was it like working with Chris Brown?

Chris stands by everything he ever told me – from beginning to end, everything he ever said.

Do you know what it’s like when you have your favorite people in the world? This is my favorite person. I hope this person lives to be 100 years old. For me, he’s one of those people.

I was just in an interview and I told them, “This is a Grammy. I got a Grammy.” This feature is a Grammy for me. I mean it.

It was incredible. I’m still going through the emotions. It’s still fresh. It still feels like it just happened. I don’t really have the full (perspective on it) yet. Maybe in a few years I’ll say, ‘Wow, that guy there,’ but right now I’m still living in the moment. So it’s emotional.
