How All-Star Kirby Yates exceeded Rangers’ early expectations, according to Chris Young

When MLB announced the rosters for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, a new chapter began with a remarkable comeback story. Along with teammate Marcus Semien, relief pitcher Kirby Yates will represent the Texas Rangers on the field at the All-Star festivities in Arlington.

Rangers general manager Chris Young recently appeared on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) to explain how Yates has exceeded the club’s initial expectations. The Rangers and the veteran right-hander agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth approximately $4.5 million in the offseason.

Which Texas Rangers made it to the 2024 AL All-Star team?

“If we thought he was going to be that good, we would have paid him a lot more,” Young said. “He has a track record. I think that’s largely because our scouts do a great job and know the person well. That’s what it comes down to: We found a player who has historically been successful in the league. He’s played at an elite level. He’s healthy.”

Young added that health is a key factor in Yates’ success, saying injuries have hampered his performance in the past, especially during a stretch from 2020-22 when he struggled with arm problems that led to Tommy John surgery.

Yates has excelled as Texas’ closer, posting a 0.86 ERA with 43 strikeouts and 13 saves in 31 appearances. This year is the second time Yates has been nominated for an All-Star game. He made the NL roster for the first time with the Padres in 2019.

Despite being voted the NL’s closer five years ago, Yates didn’t get to pitch. Young said the Rangers are seeing the “best version” of Yates.

“He knows how to compete, he knows how to achieve. He’s motivated,” Young said. “When you combine all of those factors, and health in particular, this is what you get. I don’t trust elite athletes to be physically healthy, motivated, mentally healthy and experienced. That’s a good combination for success, but Kirby has surpassed it.”
