Eastern Michigan University hosts the event “Why Juneteenth Matters”

YPSILANTI, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – Eastern Michigan University’s Department of African and African American Studies is hosting a lecture on “Why Juneteenth Matters” on Wednesday.

The virtual lecture, which will take place from noon to 2 p.m., will feature presentations by Mark Francher, a racial and social justice attorney and activist. According to a press release, Francher will discuss the “historical significance of the day and its impact on today’s society” and aims to “deepen our understanding of Juneteenth and its significance for our students and the broader Eastern Michigan University community.”

Guests have the opportunity to attend the lecture.

“We are honored to welcome Mark Fancher for our Juneteenth Lecture,” said Victor Okafor, chair of EMU’s African and African American Studies Department, in a statement. “‘Juneteenth’ is a defining moment in American history and reflects the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality. Understanding its impact helps us appreciate the progress and recognize the work that still lies ahead.”
