Across Canada, numerous Silk and Great Value brand plant-based beverages have been recalled due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

What is the recall of Silk and Great Value plant-based beverages about?

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed several cases of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes in Silk and Great Value brand plant-based milks produced by a third-party manufacturer in Ontario and distributed by Danone Canada.

“After learning of confirmed cases of Listeria monocytogenes associated with these Silk chilled beverage products, Danone Canada, along with the CFIA, took immediate action and initiated a voluntary recall of 15 Silk chilled plant-based beverages,” Danone said in a press release.

“Danone has also, as a precautionary measure, halted all production and deliveries from this facility until further notice in order to conduct a thorough investigation.”

Where does the recall apply?

The recall was first issued on July 8, 2024, and applies to products sold across Canada. It is unknown whether any illnesses have been reported in BC as a result of consumption of the affected products. To date, only nine cases of illness linked to the products have been confirmed in Ontario.

Which products are affected by the recall?

The affected products include:

• Great Value Almond Unsweetened Original, Almond Original and Almond Vanilla beverages in the 1.89 liter size; the affected items have the product code 7825 and an expiration date up to and including October 4, 2024.

• Silk Almond & Coconut Unsweetened, Almond Original, Almond Dark Chocolate, Almond Unsweetened, Almond Unsweetened Vanilla, Almond Vanilla and Coconut Original in the 1.89 litre size; the affected items have the product code 7825 and an expiry date up to and including 4 October 2024.

• Silk Coconut Unsweetened in the 1.89 liter size; the affected items have the product code 7825 and an expiration date up to and including September 27, 2024.

• Silk Oat Original, Oat Vanilla, Oat Dark Chocolate, Oat Unsweetened, Oat Unsweetened Vanilla, Almond & Cashew Unsweetened and Almond & Cashew Unsweetened Vanilla in the 1.75 litre size; the affected items have the product code 7825 and an expiry date up to and including 4 October 2024.

The affected products were all manufactured by Danone Canada.

Which products are not affected?

Other Silk items such as shelf stable Silk beverages (32 oz) including the Silk Barista line, Silk coffee creamer, plant-based Silk foods (cheese, yogurt, whipped cream), refrigerated Silk Nextmilk, Silk Unsweetened Almond 32 oz, Silk Oat Original 32 oz, or any other products not listed in the CFIA recall notice are not affected.

How did the authorities find out about the contamination?

According to the Health Canada announcement, the recall was triggered by an investigation into an outbreak of foodborne illness. So far, only nine cases have been reported in Ontario.

How do I know if my product is being recalled?

Look for an item with the product code 7825 and the expiration date to see if it is listed above. You can also look up the UPC code to see if it matches the one listed here in the Health Canada recall notice.

Food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell bad, but it can still make you sick. You may vomit or experience nausea, fever, muscle aches, headaches, and stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of becoming ill from eating the contaminated product.

What should I do if I have a contaminated product?

If you believe you have become ill from drinking any of the affected products, contact your doctor and inspect the products to determine if they are affected by the recall.

Immediately throw away or return the recalled items. All affected items will also be removed from store shelves.

Anyone affected by affected Silk products may also contact Danone Canada by phone at 1-866-233-5410 or visit www.silkcanada.ca/contact-us for information on possible refunds.

Are other plant-based beverages from Silk or Great Value being recalled?

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is currently conducting investigations that may lead to further recalls.
