The “Office” star finds this famous joke from the series “weak”

Summary

  • Steve Carell agrees that some “that’s what she said” jokes in
    The office
    are weak.
  • Carell feels that the jokes were funny in the moment, but are not as strong now.
  • Carell will not return for
    The office
    spin off,
    The paper
because there is no reason for Michael Scott to be there.

With a career spanning more than 30 years Steve Carell has apparently everything made in Hollywoodfrom the role of Jim Carrey’s rival in “Bruce Almighty”, to the voice of the character Gru in the Despicable Me series. Perhaps none of his roles will be celebrated anymore. than that of Regional Manager Michael Scott In The officewhich Carell played regularly from 2005 to 2011 and reprised for the series finale in 2013. Now, 11 years later, Carell agrees with the opinion that some of the jokes in The office – which is generally considered one of the best modern sitcoms of all time – are “a little weak”.

Appearing on BBC Radio 1 in a game called “Unpopular Opinions” where people call in and share their, well, unpopular opinions on things that most people enjoyCarell was the victim of a statement that he believes to be true: “The ‘that’s what she said’ jokes are really weak.” First voiced in the second episode of the second season of The officethe line “That’s what she said” would continue is spoken a total of 51 times throughout the seriesusually to make a crude joke about something. Carell, who helped make the expression famous, agreed with the caller.

“I understand you, you know, because you know, I’ve walked around with my kids – especially when they were a little younger – and the show hasn’t been on for 35 years, so for starters
it’s an old joke now
but when I walk around with my kids, someone rolls down the window of their car and yells, “That’s what she said,” without context,
not even in response to (anything)
. No structure at all.”

Carell further explained that most people don’t understand the meaning of the jokeand the intention with which it was said. To this day, he says, he is still asked to write down the line when he signs an autograph, but not “Stick to things like that.” For Carell, “That’s what she said” was fun back then, but these days that is not so much the case.

“I just can not,
I can’t stand that
. And I agree with you. It was funny in the moment, and certainly the character found it funny, which was the joke. Because
it was even a bad joke back then
And the character didn’t have a good sense of humor.
I think people forget that
that it was initially intended to be mocking.”

Steve Carell will not return for “The Office” spin-off

“There’s really no reason why my character should appear”

I hope to bring back some of what The office so great, creator Greg Daniels, who adapted the British version of the series for the American audience, is ready for the start of a new spin-off show titled The paperthat was ordered by Peacock earlier this yearThe new series is set in a dying small-town newspaper in the Midwest and is produced by the same fictional documentary film crew that The office. While most of the supporting cast has not yet been named, it has been confirmed that The paperwill be Domhnall Gleeson (war of stars, Ex Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus).

A person who will not appear is Carell’s character Michael Scott. Although the 61-year-old star says it doesn’t make much sense for Scott to appear in the spin-off, that’s not stopping him from watching it.

“I will
I will watch, but I will not show up
. It’s just a new thing and there are really
no reason for my character to show up
into something like that. But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea.”
