Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” hits No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100

Music has always been about inspiration, it is a medium that allows you to build on the work of those who have worked before you. In a way, music is magical as it captures a moment that has different meanings for different people. Shaboozeythe rising country star from Virginia, is on a roll with his hit single “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The single is an interpolation of J-Kwon’s “Tipsy,” a successful rap song from 20 years ago. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is now the Number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100, and landed one spot higher on the Billboard Hot 100 than the original “Tipsy”.

It’s funny how time works. “Tipsy” was a huge club, radio and party hit created by St. Louis native J-Kwon. It even helped popularize a dance called “Chicken Head.” The fact that “Tipsy” is still around two decades later shows that not only is hip-hop eternal, but that everything has its origins somewhere. Shaboozey and J-Kwon performed a mashup of their songs together at the BET Awards on June 30.

With “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Shaboozey’s incredible run continues. His two appearances on Beyonce’s March album Cowboy Carter (“SPAGHETTII,” “SWEET ★ HONEY ★ BUCKIIN’”) set the stage for the rise he now enjoys. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” only added to his hype, and his May album Where I was is not where I am going has further positioned him. Country and music in general have a new name to keep an eye on.
