Lavender and Kasprzak’s new book benefits the Orchard East community

MONROE – Aaron Lavender and Stephanie Zorn Kasprzak’s latest book has two big goals: to inspire a new generation of voters and to raise money for a housing project in Monroe’s Orchard East community.

Lavender and Kasprzak just released their second children’s book, “Why We Vote.” The 56-page tome was released June 22 and is available for $9.99 on Amazon.com and whywevotekids.com.

All proceeds will benefit Lavender and Kasprzak’s organization, Community Reimagined, LLC. The couple founded the development company around 2020. The goal is to bring public amenities and improvements to Monroe’s Orchard East neighborhood. Community Reimagined’s projects include providing WiFi in the neighborhood and a cleanup effort.

“We are pleased that the Monroe City Council recently approved a resolution to support Community Reimagined to apply for funding for a housing project. The funds from Why We Vote will support this and future projects,” said Kasprzak.

Kasprzak is the executive director of the Monroe County Opportunity Program and the Opportunity Center at the Arthur Lesow Community Center. Lavender is a regional community building activist, entrepreneur, and MCOP Advisory Board member.

“Aaron’s dream was always to write a voting book to educate young people about the voting process, to teach them about history and to encourage civic engagement,” Kasprzak said. “We have a moral obligation to teach our kids that they have a voice. The book also has a cool feature: you can put your ‘I voted’ sticker on it after you vote. It was a good time to write the book now that we’re in an election cycle.”

The book offers a history of civic engagement.

“We believe voting is the greatest civic duty, and yet many do not exercise their right,” said Lavender. “By laying the foundation at a young age, we hope to encourage voting throughout their lives.”

“Why We Vote” was illustrated by Stanley Mbamalu, a freelance illustrator from Nigeria who also illustrated the couple’s first book, “Lloyd Goes to Africa.”

“Stanley is a wonderful person to work with. He is a real talent. He is the perfect partner for our vision,” said Kasprzak.

“Lloyd Goes to Africa” was released in February 2023. It is the story of Lavender’s uncle, Lloyd D. Ward, the CEO of Ward Holdings International. Ward works to improve conditions in the country.

“The response was overwhelming,” Kasprzak said. “Thanks to the support for (the book), we were able to provide a ton of food and oils to 130 children at a special school in Tandahimba, Tanzania, Africa.”
