Taylor Fritz reveals what he said to Alexander Zverev in a long conversation at the net after his epic Wimbledon comeback

Taylor Fritz reveals what he said to Alexander Zverev in a long conversation at the net after his epic Wimbledon comeback

Taylor Fritz revealed that he “wished Alexander Zverev all the best” during their chat at the net following his comeback win over the number 4 seed to reach the semifinals of Wimbledon.

Zverev played with a grey sleeve on his left knee after suffering a heavy fall in his last match against Cam Norrie.

After the match against the former British number one, Zverev said he had “overstretched” his knee and would need to undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

However, against Fritz he showed no signs of knee problems at the beginning and quickly gained a two-set lead.

However, Fritz did not let his head hang in this duel of strong servers, after having only allowed one break in each of the first two sets.

The American then stepped up the gear in the decisive third set and made his first break of the match before being eliminated on the third serve.

In the fourth game there was another tiebreak in which the two were barely separated.

Fritz was able to force a deciding set with the momentum fully on his side and Zverev seemed to lower his level.

The world number four seemed to have problems at times as his knee gradually began to cause him problems.

Fritz showed no mercy on the other side of the net, breaking mid-set before retiring for the match.

The two hugged each other longer than usual at the net after the game and Fritz explained what was said in his interview on the court.

“It’s all good,” said Fritz.

“I felt like he obviously wasn’t moving as well as his knee in the fifth set.

“I only wished him the best.”

It is the fourth time that Fritz has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, having been eliminated at this stage in each of the previous three tournaments.

The 26-year-old will face Lorenzo Musetti for a place in the semifinals of Wimbledon.

Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic will fight for the last place in the quarterfinals tonight. The winner will then face Alex de Minaur.
