Poland has also pledged to continue training the Ukrainian armed forces and to continue acting as a logistics hub for Kyiv, facilitating the delivery of Western weapons through its territory.

Ukraine has committed to reforms, sharing intelligence information and experience from its operations in Warsaw with the Polish army and contributing to the modernization of the Polish armed forces, said a statement from the Ukrainian presidential office.

“We regard every word in this agreement as a mutual commitment – not an empty promise,” Tusk said, adding: “We know very well that if this war were to end badly, it would end badly not only for Ukraine, but also for Poland, for the whole of Europe and the entire Western world.”

Ukraine has so far signed 20 such bilateral security agreements with its allies, and 21 with Poland. They contain specific provisions on long-term military and financial assistance and training for Ukrainian troops, as well as arms deliveries, but do not oblige the signatories to go to war on behalf of Ukraine.

Kyiv hopes the agreements will form a kind of NATO light until it is allowed to join the alliance – an issue to be discussed at the alliance’s summit in Washington this week. However, none of the agreements are treaties and their non-binding status makes them fragile, as future governments could easily pull out.

The Polish agreement has several peculiarities compared to the other agreements signed by Ukraine.
