How Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are giving us what Hollywood no longer does – Awardsdaily

The left at large has invested so much in apps like Twitter that are interconnected with traditional online media (yes, the internet is that old) that they are missing the main artery of pop culture in 2024: TikTok.

As far as I can tell, Hollywood is way behind here, and I’m excited to see how they catch up. One of the reasons Barbenheimer was such a box office hit was because it became a TikTok phenomenon. Celebrities haven’t yet realized that if they’re not living on TikTok now, it’s going to be harder to maintain their status. The next generations aren’t going to sit around and watch entertainment TV or read the trade magazines. Old school advertising doesn’t really work. It’s high time to take it to the next level.

I first became aware of this during the trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. We were all on Tik Tok, following the trial. We became active participants. We made videos, commented, and eventually helped defend Depp, who became a Tik Tok sensation.

The same goes for the rise of Taylor Swift and her romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t experienced it myself. Like so many others on TikTok, I was drawn into the world of Taylor Swift because the app was flooded with clips from her Eras tour. They came from everywhere. First from the United States and then from around the world. They will continue through November.

The real-life drama that played out was pretty impressive. It wasn’t until I saw TikTok and Taylor Swift falling in love with Kelce that I realized Hollywood doesn’t make movies like that anymore. We never see the princess being saved by the prince. We see the boss saving the guy, the weaker man. We last saw that in The Fall Guy, where Emily Blunt’s character is the director of the film and Ryan Gosling is a simple stuntman. It wasn’t romantic or funny. It was, as usual, an uphill battle.

In real life, there are no activists or overseers making sure everyone follows the rules. There are no “sensitivity readers” or “intimacy coordinators.” It’s just the truth. Depp’s trial would never be made into a movie in Hollywood because they would never cast the Me Too victim as a villain. Swift and Kelce’s love story probably wouldn’t make it past the pitch meeting (though it will apparently be a movie on the Hallmark network).

It seems to me that Hollywood is constantly giving people what they should want, rather than what they want. What do they want? Masculine men, beautiful women, love stories, true crime, and thrillers.

And yes, it is true that Fly Me to the Moon, a romantic comedy, is coming to theaters next week:

But it’s exactly what I imagined, even though it looks like an entertaining film for other reasons. It’s meant to be more clever, fun, interesting and feminist than rapturous romance. But of course there’s room for both. What so many have experienced all at once in the last week is something we really don’t see much of lately.

We all saw Swift and Kelce kiss at the Super Bowl. The ratings were sky high, 150 million people watched. Memo to Hollywood: What are you guys doing not coming up with the most basic way to get attention? ROMANCE. But not romance with the boss. Not some NEWS wrapped up in a romantic comedy. It’s the simplest story in the world. In every movie from The Night Before the Wedding to Pretty Woman, we’ve seen the same thing: A complicated woman is rescued by the love of her life.

I wasn’t a Swiftie before the phenomenon began (though Clarence Moye is a devotee), but eventually the bug bit me. Swift’s heartbreak and life experience pour into her lyrics, which are very personal and specific. Her fans know her disappointments and the horrible men in her life, and that’s why the relationship with Kelce hit her so hard. It may seem silly to you, but I only mention it to point out that Hollywood has more or less failed its audience by chasing ideologies instead of telling good stories like this one, which are obviously still needed.

As we all watched Taylor Swift’s world tour, clips of Travis Kelce started popping up. Then we got clips of Taylor Swift singing for Travis Kelce. We saw endless clips of him dancing at her concerts – her biggest fan. Then, on the third night in London, he appeared onstage with her to save her heart so she could go on with the show. That caused a cultural earthquake on TikTok. It was the clip that went around the world, and millions of women simultaneously fainted. Screamed. Cried. And lost their minds. Endless videos started popping up on TikTok about the symbolism of Kelce’s performance. How he carried her, how she blew him a kiss. It was legendary.

The second big event was on the third night in Amsterdam, Kelce’s last moments with Swift before he has to return to the States for training. She used her acoustic set to mix three songs together as a love tune for Travis. Now Swifties are beside themselves. She must be engaged, they concluded. Everyone was crying and deeply moved by the moment. Even Travis Kelce!

I just hope that what happens is that the Democrats don’t drag Taylor Swift into their campaign and force her to take sides. It’s so much better than what we can all enjoy right now without having to deal with the usual hate and division we find everywhere else.

Here are some insights into the Swift/Kelce phenomenon.

Taylor Swift has acted in films in the past and is currently directing a movie, but now it’s time to make her the movie star she’s not quite yet, at least to save the box office.
