The handshake between Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz was quite tense at Wimbledon, and now an explanation is emerging.

The 26-year-old American Fritz recovered from losing the first two sets on Monday, beat Zverev and made it into the quarterfinals of the major.

After the match, Zverev admitted that he was frustrated with the members of Fritz’s box who “may not come from the tennis world.”

In an interview on the pitch after his comeback, Fritz was asked about the tense handshake.

“It’s all good,” said Fritz, noting that Zverev believes Fritz’s entourage is acting insensitively in view of an injury.

“He felt like he wasn’t moving so well with his knee in the fifth set. I just wished him the best.”

Fritz’s girlfriend Morgan Riddle suggested in a post on her Instagram story after the game that she had been loudly cheering on her boyfriend.

On a slide, Riddle posted a photo of the court with the caption, “Cheer loud, girls.”

Riddle posted a second slide of herself dancing and sipping a drink with the caption, “When your man wins for the girls.”

Previously, Fritz was asked in the on-court interview about the support of the team around him in his box and answered with a dry joke.

“My team has always been very supportive and loved me, but most of the time I looked up to them, I was complaining about something,” laughed Fritz.

“But I mean, it’s great to have them here and the week or two we were at Wimbledon was a great team experience.”

Fritz will play against Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
