Golf News for Men
There is some pretty good golf being played in the men’s league at Southampton Golf and Country Club at the moment. At this time of year the members have played so much golf that their game is getting better and better, which often results in very low scores being made, especially in the net score area.

Often in the early months of the year, scores are not as good as they were at the end of last year and handicaps start to rise. Handicaps are calculated by Golf Canada, a system where members enter their scores into a program and a handicap is created based on your best eight scores from the last twenty rounds. So it doesn’t take long for the handicap to go up by two, three or four points early in the year if your game isn’t that good.

Now, more than two months into the golf season, players are improving their scores, but their handicaps remain higher than their scores suggest, and low net scores are the result. This is not sandbagging, as some may think, but that is a topic to be covered later.

In the A-Flight, which is reserved for players with handicaps of 0 to 8 on the first nine holes, Jim Martin equaled his previous low score of 38 and won the first Low Gross. Derryl Urstadt took second Low Gross with 39 and Derek Johnston took third Low Gross with 40.
Jim Angel won First Low Net with a net score of 35 (even par), while Bruce Towner and Rocky Weller shared Second Low Net with net scores of 38.

In the B-Flight for players with handicaps between 9 and 14, Gord Moore played an excellent round of 41 to win the first low gross. Paul Nugent was one stroke behind with 43 to secure the second low gross and Bill Hatt took third low gross with 46.
Regan Gascon won First Low Net with a net score of 30 and Mike Pitzen was five strokes back with a net score of 35 for Second Low Net. Mike O’Donahue won Third Low Net with a net score of 37.
Gord Wright was closest to the pin on the ninth hole and Doug Hamilton sank the longest putt on hole 6.

Golf news for seniors
There is some exciting news in senior golf this week. Kent McVeigh, a regular in the Senior Men’s League, has made his first hole-in-one on the 18th hole. The 18th hole is 165 yards long and offers plenty of trouble if you hit your ball to either side of the fairway. The green slopes from right to left, making it almost impossible to get up and down if you hit your ball to the right side of the fairway.
But Kent didn’t have to worry about that. He hit his driver straight down the fairway and his ball landed in front of the green, rolled towards the hole and fell in. Ron Wilson was his playing partner that day and witnessed the event. Congratulations, Kent!
