“That was the best call we ever got”: Family speaks out after arrests in connection with the death of a 3-year-old Moorhead boy

MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – A little over three months ago, Eastyn Deronjic was found unconscious in his Moorhead apartment. He was taken to the hospital where he died.

As the months went by, family and friends demanded answers. A rally was called in the hope of speeding up the process.

“You have no idea how hard this was. Nights, days, hours, minutes, seconds went by until we got the call this morning. It was the best call we ever got,” said Katterrius Reams, Eastyn’s uncle and godfather.

Through that call, the family was informed that two people had been arrested for murder in connection with Eastyn’s death. 21-year-old Shiann Erickson and 24-year-old Rosa Garza were both booked into prison on second-degree voluntary murder charges.

Reams explained how they reacted when they got the call: “We were sad and happy, but actually more than anything, we are happy that someone is being held accountable for my nephew’s death.”

I am glad that someone is being held accountable and I will continue to seek justice.

“I can’t say that justice has been done yet, but until she is convicted, it is a step in that direction,” Reams said.

On the way to a sentence that can hopefully bring them closure. Reams explained: “I hope they get the maximum. I don’t want any shortcuts in the legal system or anything like that. Now is the time when I will believe in our legal system.”

I believe little Eastyn will get the justice he deserves.

It is currently unknown exactly how Eastyn died. The district attorney’s office said it will not release the autopsy report anytime soon because it is part of an ongoing investigation.
