Michigan Football: Expected total wins drops for 2024 season

Even though Michigan will likely field one of the best defenses in all of college football again in 2024, the Wolverines have uncertainties on offense, especially at the quarterback position. Michigan is also replacing its entire defensive staff and will employ a head coach for the first time in Sherrone Moore.

Given those question marks and a challenging schedule that includes three likely preseason top-five teams in Texas, Oregon and Ohio State, as well as Washington and USC, bookmakers and sports bettors are not as confident about the Wolverines’ prospects for the 2024 season as they were three months ago.

FanDuel Sportsbook recently adjusted Michigan’s expected win total for the upcoming season, lowering the Wolverines’ over-under odds from 9.5 to 8.5 wins this season. Originally, bettors were given odds of -170 if they picked Michigan to win fewer than nine games and +138 if they picked over nine. Essentially, FanDuel told bettors to expect UM to win fewer than nine games.

Currently, bettors are getting odds of -150 for the Wolverines to win over eight games, while odds of +122 are being given for under eight games. Given those numbers, FanDuel still expects Michigan to win nine games in 2024, although bookmakers there think the Wolverines will win 10 games are less likely than they were in March when the original numbers were released.

Ultimately, the numbers on a betting board won’t determine what Michigan’s season will look like this fall. If the Wolverines are as good defensively as expected, they’ll be tough for anyone to beat. If Michigan exceeds expectations offensively and its starting quarterback plays better than expected, this team can compete for much more than nine wins.

Michigan opens the 2024 season with a game against Fresno State on August 31 (7:30 p.m. EST/NBC) at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
