Michigan’s Attorney General appears to suggest Biden should resign in his post about Alex Morgan

DEXTER, Michigan – A leading Michigan Democrat appeared to suggest that President Biden should resign in a tweet about 35-year-old soccer player Alex Morgan’s non-participation in the U.S. women’s Olympic team.

The post by the state’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, seems to suggest that the president should accept his age “with dignity” and “pass the baton” for the good of the country.

“I adore Alex Morgan. She is one of the greatest of all time,” Nessel wrote in response to Morgan’s announcement that she would not compete in Paris. “But she has aged significantly since her prime as a player and has gracefully accepted that it was time to pass the baton to win gold.”

Morgan, a star striker for San Diego Wave FC, was left off the Olympic squad just four years after serving as co-captain of the national team.

An indication that Nessel wasn’t just talking about the games: Morgan posted the tweet she responded to on June 26 – two weeks ago.

Nessel’s unusual decision to speak out weeks later makes it likely that she is calling for a thinly veiled call for Biden’s resignation following his disastrous performance in the debate against former President Donald Trump.

As if her point hadn’t been made clear, Nessel wrote in a follow-up post: “No one will ever forget her incredible accomplishments, but Alex only wants the best for the team and for America. That’s what makes her a true champion.”

Nessel’s posts are bizarre for other reasons too.

Nessel made the slightly disrespectful comment that Morgan had “aged noticeably.” And she wrote that Morgan was “passing the baton,” when in reality the forward did not want to be cut from the roster.

The fact that the Attorney General manipulated Morgan’s announcement and called on the President to resign is an important development in the key swing state of Michigan, where Democrats are not united behind Biden’s support.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently reiterated her support for Biden and dismissed rumors that she would take his place as the Democratic nominee, but other prominent Democrats in the state have remained silent on the issue.

For example, Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives Curtis Hertel Jr. has not spoken publicly on the issue since Biden’s debate appearance.

Her candidate for the House of Representatives, Kristen McDonald Rivet, also declined to comment on the debate, telling The Detroit News: “I’m not a television pundit.” Both candidates are running in very competitive districts.

Nessel’s not-so-subtle criticism of Biden, as well as the silence of other Democrats in Michigan, suggest that politicians in the Great Lakes state fear a negative impact on the election results if Biden continues his campaign.
