Traffic death of mother and toddler leads to urgent action in Mamaroneck

There is an urgent call to improve pedestrian safety in Mamaroneck. It comes nearly three weeks after a 6-year-old boy and his mother were struck and killed by a smaller school bus on their way to school.

The accident occurred on June 20 at the corner of Mamaroneck Avenue and New Street.

Six-year-old Michael and his mother, Molly Murphy Donovan, were crossing the street when they were struck and killed by a smaller school bus, police said. Police initially said the two were using the crosswalk and had a pedestrian sign. Police also determined the school bus driver had a green light to turn.

The police say it was a tragic accident. No charges have been filed against the school bus driver.

However, the devastation sparked strong reactions from the population, who urged village leaders to improve pedestrian safety.

These include increased use of school crossing guards, a change in traffic lights and a reduction in speed limits in the area where this accident occurred.

People in the community told News 12 they want to see these new safety measures implemented before the start of the next school year.

The organizers of the action and other community members will be present at the municipal council meeting on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m.

County officials told News 12 they take these concerns seriously and are actively interested in doing everything they can to make this stretch of road safer.
