Police: Shooting at block party in Detroit, Michigan, leaves 2 dead and 19 injured

DENVER — According to Michigan State Police, two people are dead and 19 others injured in a shooting in Detroit.

The shooting occurred early Sunday at a street festival, where someone opened fire just before 2:30 a.m. Eastern Time, CNN affiliate WDIV reported.

The 19 survivors suffered “various injuries,” Michigan State Police said Sunday. It is unclear how many of the injured suffered gunshot wounds or how many were injured in other ways.

Authorities have not yet arrested anyone, police said. State police said they are assisting Detroit police in the investigation.

“Investigators and forensic experts are currently analyzing all available evidence and will continue their work throughout the weekend,” Detroit police said in an emailed statement to CNN on Sunday.

The statement continued: “DPD will implement a comprehensive new street festival strategy and will announce full details at a meeting with the police chief and mayor tomorrow.”

CNN has reached out to Michigan State Police for further information.

Law enforcement statistics and independent researchers consistently indicate that the summer months are a time of heightened gun violence in the United States. And July 1-7 is a particularly violent time each year, both in terms of mass shootings and individual incidents.
