At least 3 dead in Houston area during Hurricane Beryl

HOUSTON – At least three people were killed in the Houston area when Hurricane Beryl hit.

Two of the three deaths were caused by fallen trees and another person died in a house fire.

When Beryl made landfall in Matagorda Bay around 4 a.m., wind gusts reached speeds of up to 120 km/h.

Early Monday morning, a tree fell on a home in the 20900 block of Heather Grove Ct in Atascocita, trapping two residents inside.

A 53-year-old man was reportedly trapped and unresponsive. He was reportedly sitting inside the house with his family waiting out the storm when an oak tree fell on the roof, causing the building to collapse on him. He was later pronounced dead.

His wife and children were unharmed. Another passenger was taken to hospital with injuries.

In another incident Monday morning in northwest Houston, a caller reported that a tree had fallen through the roof of her grandmother’s room in the 17400 block of Rustic Canyon Trail. The 74-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

In an interview with Chief Sam Peña of the Houston Fire Department, he confirmed that at least one person had died in a house fire.

It happened on Bendell Road, off the Gulf Freeway, miles from Hobby Airport.

On Wednesday, when Beryl reached Category 4, at least seven people were killed as the storm swept through Jamaica, according to the Associated Press.
