Former Evansville Club Treasurer Charged With Gun ‘Theft’

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Authorities arrested the former treasurer of the Westside Sportsmen’s Club on Sunday after launching an investigation into unauthorized purchases the club was unaware of.

According to an affidavit, two board members of the Westside Sportsmen’s Club provided information to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office in February 2023 regarding unauthorized purchases and missing firearms totaling $10,804.07. In addition to this loss, the board also reported approximately $5,000 in cash from deposits and missing checks, a missing $2,000 check donation to Heritage Federal Credit Union, and a $1,500 donation check from the West Side Nut Club that could not be located.

According to the two board members, 73-year-old David Miller, who served as acting treasurer from 2015 to 2021, was authorized to hold one of the club’s credit cards. The board members say Miller was authorized to purchase firearms with funds they received through the NRA from their federal grants, but claim Miller made unauthorized purchases.

While executing a search warrant in March of last year, authorities say they found items in Miller’s garage that the club had reported missing. Miller reportedly told authorities he had already returned all of the items to the club.

Miler was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on the following charges:

  • Theft of a firearm
  • Theft (value of property between $750 and less than $50,000)
  • False information in the criminal record (four cases)
  • Using false information to acquire a firearm (six counts)

He was later released on bail.
