Two dead in Texas. Beryl continues north as a tropical storm
Two people died Monday morning after trees fell on their homes in Harris County, Texas, as the now-Tropical Storm Beryl continued to move north through the Lone Star State.
Shortly after 10 a.m. CDT, the storm was downgraded from hurricane, but heavy rains, dangerous storm surge and damaging winds are expected. There is also a possibility of brief tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service in Houston.

2 dead in Harris County, Texas. Trees fall on houses in two separate incidents
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the deaths on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In the first incident, an oak tree fell on a home in the 20900 block of Heather Grove Court in the Kings River Village development, burying a 53-year-old man under the debris, Gonzalez wrote on X around 8 a.m. CDT.
The man was reportedly sitting inside the house with his family waiting out the storm when the tree fell on the roof, hitting the rafters and causing part of the house to collapse on him. His wife and children were unharmed.
A 74-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her home in the 17400 block of Rustic Canyon Trail in Atascocita, Gonzalez reported around 10 a.m. CDT. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Where is Harris County, Texas?
Harris County is located on the upper Gulf Coast in southeast Texas. It includes the city of Houston. At 1,778 square miles, it is the largest county in Texas east of the Nueces River.
Atascocita is located in the northeastern part of the county on Lake Houston. Kings River Village is located in Bammel Village, near Westfield.
What is the connection between the total number of fatalities and Hurricane Beryl?
During its first landfall as a hurricane, Beryl struck Jamaica, Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, killing at least 11 people. Three people were reportedly killed in Grenada, three in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, three in Venezuela, and two in Jamaica.
No deaths have been reported so far from the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula.
