Emma Roberts stresses that life as a “Nepo baby” is not as great as people say, and revealed that famous family members have even cost her jobs in the past.

The 33-year-old US actress made a name for herself in the 2010s when she appeared in films such as “Scream 4” and “We’re the Millers” and became the star of the television series “American Horror Story”.

But her star might have risen even higher if her father hadn’t been “The Dark Knight” actor Eric Roberts and her aunt none other than “Pretty Woman” Julia Roberts.

At least that’s how Emma sees it, saying: “I’ve lost more jobs than I’ve gained through being in the industry. People have opinions and sometimes they may not be good opinions about people in your family.”

A Nepo baby is a person who works in the entertainment industry and has benefited from the success of their parents (or other family members) in similar professions.

However, Emma insisted to Flaunt magazine that this was anything but the case: “I never got a job because of it, but I know I definitely lost a few jobs because of it.”

The “Madame Web” actress then pointed to a 2022 New Yorker article that featured an image in which the faces of so-called Nepo babies were superimposed over the faces of real babies.

Although Emma was not in this picture, she still thought it was a “cheap trick”: “Should I feel insulted? It was a cheap trick to put all the celebrity children on the cover of a magazine on baby bodies.”

She continued, “Maybe the conversation about the Nepo baby would have been a more interesting and intelligent article in Vanity Fair, written in a nuanced and sophisticated way, but instead it was this kind of viral misanthropy.”

Last month, Emma reminded everyone that none other than George Clooney is a Nepo baby himself, with a famous aunt presumably helping him get into the industry.

“Everyone loves overnight success stories like that. And unless you’re the girl from nowhere who makes it in Hollywood, you roll your eyes and think, ‘Well, your dad was like that,'” the actress told Table for Two.

“I always joke, ‘Why doesn’t anyone tell George Clooney he’s a Nepo baby? (His aunt) Rosemary Clooney was an icon,'” she explained on the podcast “Table for Two.”

She then argued that women in the industry are more likely to face accusations of being a nepo baby, adding: “I feel like young girls have a harder time with the nepo baby thing. I don’t really see people shaming sons of famous actors, but they shouldn’t.”

Rosemary Clooney was a hugely popular actress and singer in the 1950s. George took his first steps in the industry as a chauffeur for his aunt and other famous stars.

Emma also said in her interview that while Nepo babies have “an advantage” in the industry, they still have to prove themselves and can have a tough time “if people haven’t had good experiences with other people in your family.”
