Manisha Koirala recalled that early in her career, she refused to wear a bikini when a famous photographer asked her to pose in a two-piece.
Bollywood actors Manisha Koirala, who continue to support the success of their latest work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, recently spoke about a time early in her career when she was asked by a famous photographer to pose in a two-piece bikini. While the actress admitted that she often wears a bikini while swimming, she did not consider it necessary for the photoshoot and refused to wear it.
Recalling the incident in an interview, she said, “At the very beginning of my career, I was asked to take photographs and there was this very famous photographer. I went with my mother and initially this photographer was saying things like, ‘You are the next superstar and this and that.’ Cut to him bringing me a two-piece bikini and asking me to put it on. I told him, ‘Sir, I wear this when I go to the beach or go swimming, but if I come into the film business like this, I don’t want this and I’m not wearing that.'”

When the photographer came to know about Manisha’s inhibitions, he scolded her. Manisha recalled, “I told him, either you photograph me fully clothed, otherwise I’m…” I remember him giving me a long dialogue. He said, “Jo mitti pighalne se sharmati ho uske murti kaise banaye (How do I make a statue out of clay that doesn’t melt).” I haven’t forgotten that.”
During the conversation, Manisha admitted that this was the mentality of some people in the 90s. She also recalled that the same photographer had to photograph her later in her career when she was already a big star and he quickly took back his words and said, “Oh, I knew you would become a big star.” Although Manisha was not happy with his behavior, she also understood where he was coming from: “I don’t want to be mean to the person, but their conscience was like that. Their notoriety was like that, so they behaved like that,” she added.
Manisha played the pivotal role of Malikajaan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut web show Heeramandi and received widespread praise for her performance. Before the web show, she acted in Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada in 2023.
