Clint Eastwood’s surprising connection to Jeff Daniels’ Netflix series

A man in full Star Jeff Daniels talks about Clint Eastwood’s influence on the rest of his television career. In the Netflix miniseries, that influence is clear.




Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels explained how Eastwood’s directing style influenced his approach to making television. “I never sit around with the cast on any project and talk about our journey together,” Daniels said. “I love letting it happen for the first time on camera in the first take.” I learned it from Clint Eastwood’s films. You get a shot and then Clint moves the camera.”

Daniels continued: “It teaches you to get it right the first time. But television has less money and has to squeeze more in every day. If you don’t get it right the first time, it gets edited later and then it’s moved on. You have to get it. So if we don’t rehearse and have to get it right the first time, Let’s live dangerously and just roll.” Daniels went on to discuss how the responsiveness of filmmaking is inherently beneficial to the entire process. He said, “Then when the actors know their lines and have a plan, that clashes. I don’t really want to know what Bill Camp has planned. I don’t want to know what Tom Pelphrey is going to do. I want to see it on camera so I can react to it.”



“A Man in Full” premiered on Netflix in May

Directed by Regina King and Thomas Schlamme and based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Tom Wolfe, A man in full Daniels plays Charlie Croker, a real estate mogul whose sudden bankruptcy draws the attention of all manner of economic and political enemies. The series also stars Diane Lane, Tom Pelphrey, Aml Ameen, Chanté Adams, Sarah Jones, William Jackson Harper, Jon Michael Hill and Hollywood icon Lucy Liu. After its release A man in full received relatively average, though often mediocre, reviews.

In May, Daniels spoke out about his concerns that his iconic role as Harry Dunne in “The Dumb and Dumber would ruin his entire career as an actor. “I had agents who were not wrong and told me, ‘You are a serious actor. This is not the direction you should go. We are going to stop this and throw you out of this movie,'” Daniels recalled. “But I wanted to make a splash with a comedy. And I wanted to work with Jim Carrey.” Although Dumb and Dumber was anything but a critics’ darling, but it made big waves at the box office: on a budget of $13 million, the film grossed over $247 million and was the start of a media franchise that consists of an animated series as well as a feature film prequel and a sequel in 2003 and 2014.

A man in full is now available to stream on Netflix.
