Kaleena McQueen, non-traditional education authority, writes book about bullying

McQueen is a Broward County native but grew up in Haines City. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Central Florida.

McQueen spent over 10 years in Orange County working in special education. After reconciling with her now husband, she moved to Tampa.

Currently, she supports all non-traditional schools, including careers centers, alternative schools and schools for children with severe disabilities. Her responsibilities also include the educational aspect of the youth correctional institutions and Falkenburg Prison.

McQueen has always enjoyed writing. In high school, she wrote a student column for the Lakeland Ledger.

“In 2016, my father was being treated for lung cancer. I teased him about how confident he was. My father was a very elegant and intelligent man. He said he wasn’t always like that. He was bullied as a child. That moved me and I kept that memory.”

McQueen’s Father died, but she appreciated his story of how he overcame bullying,

“I sent the short story to an editor who encouraged me to expand the story into a full book. It took three years before I got back to her, but the editor was still enthusiastic about the project.”

The book deals with the bullying of a middle school student and his father.

McQueen lives with her husband in Tampa, DeWitt Jonesand two children, Khalind And Dakota.
