It’s the one collaboration you never knew you wanted. Sanrio is combining its adorable powder puffs with Junji Ito’s tragically doomed or murderous characters in a pop-up coming later this summer or early fall.
The special collaboration between Junji Ito and Sanrio will be on display exclusively at Parco stores in Tokyo this year from August 23 to September 9, before moving on to Osaka from September 27 to October 14. So if you’re planning on watching the leaves change, why not stop by Parco and pick up some merchandise?
The goods for sale are strangely pastel and innocent despite the collaboration. However, only three characters from Junji Ito’s series are featured. The first is of course the self-healing and replicating Tomie, who is most prominently seen with Sanrio’s mascot Hello Kitty. However, she is also paired with Pompompurin and My Melody and wears their iconic headgear. Whether that’s a red bow, a beret or a bonnet with bunny ears.

The next two characters are the ghosts of the crossroads from the four-volume manga Lovesickness dead. This includes both Pretty Intersection Boy in black, who gets a cameo with Lloromannic Berry, and Pretty Intersection Boy in white, who gets Cinnamoroll. Sorry, Cherry!
The pop-up will feature all sorts of merchandise including holographic stickers, keychains, coasters, tote bags, and t-shirts. I can almost guarantee that the t-shirt with Tomie and Hello Kitt’s bow will be the first to sell out. $30 is almost a steal!
Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that this pop-up will make its way out of the country. That’s a shame because the imagery is pretty iconic. The only thing I would change would be a bit more spiral iconography and maybe a shark on metal legs terrorizing the Sanrio family. Luckily, if you’re craving it Uzumaki touch, there’s an anime coming soon too.
