LAGC:

It has been a busy spring for the Los Alamos Garden Club. During our final workgroup in the Memorial Rose Garden, Cameron Meadows, winner of the 2024 Los Alamos Garden Club Scholarship, met with and thanked members present in the garden.

Meadows, who will graduate from Los Alamos High School in 2024, plans to attend the University of Colorado Boulder in the fall to study environmental design. While at LAHS, Cameron was a member of the Eco Club and participated in sports, including hockey, lacrosse and golf. He also worked and participated in church activities.

On a wet, snowy day earlier this season, District II of the New Mexico Garden Clubs, consisting of the Los Alamos Garden Club, Summit Garden Club, and Floral Designers Club, held its district meeting, presided over by District Director Kersti Rock. The members in attendance were treated to an excellent program on penstemon by Dr. Larry Deaven.

In April, the New Mexico Garden Clubs’ annual state convention was held in Santa Fe. Chaired by Laurie Hixson, club member and 2nd Vice President of the New Mexico Garden Clubs, the convention was a major undertaking and a resounding success! Attendees from across the state gathered to open the convention’s general session at the Governor’s Mansion. Following the opening session at the Mansion, members attended additional programs at the convention hotel, including a keynote address by George Duda, a New Mexico expert in forestry, particularly urban forestry. The New Mexico Garden Clubs were especially honored by the presence of the South Central Region Director of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., Sarah McReynolds.

Throughout the spring, the Los Alamos Garden Club continued to work on its application to Los Alamos County for a fence around the Memorial Rose Garden. At the June meeting of the Historic Preservation Advisory Board, the club’s application for a fence to deter deer from Kersti Rock was presented and unanimously approved. The next steps for the club are approval from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division and funding for the fence from the county.

The Los Alamos Garden Club meets on the third Monday of each month at 10 a.m. from September through May at the Crossroads Bible Church. All are welcome. In addition to our monthly program, the Los Alamos Garden Club has maintained the Memorial Rose Garden since the early 1950s. Come garden with us!
