Governor calls for action against Thapar’s shooters

Two days after three Nihangs attempted to assassinate Shiv Sena (Punjab) leader Sandeep Thapar alias Gora outside the Civil Hospital, Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit arrived in Ludhiana and took an update on the case from Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal. Purohit said he would personally monitor the case. While directing the officer to file a report, the Governor demanded strict action against Thapar’s gunman (ASI) Sukhwant Singh, who had allegedly posed as a mute spectator during the attack. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sakshi Sawhney was also present.

Earlier, the governor had tried to meet Thapar’s family members at the Circuit House, but the victim’s wife refused, saying she could not leave her husband alone anywhere. Purohit said he had assured the family of justice. The governor was supposed to visit the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where Sandeep Thapar is undergoing treatment, but he postponed the visit and asked Thapar’s family to meet him at the Circuit House.

“I have listened to the updates from the doctors treating him. The doctors have stated that Thapar will not suffer any disability and will be cured,” he said.

Shiv Sena (Punjab) leader Rajiv Tandon said the right-wing groups would hold a meeting on Monday to decide on the next course of action and are likely to stage a protest.

Meanwhile, Sanjeev Arora, Rajya Sabha MP from Ludhiana, visited the hospital to enquire about Thapar’s health. While speaking to Thapar, he assured him of all possible help.
