Harry Styles reveals Chris Nolan’s only styling tip

One Direction star Harry Styles made his acting debut this year in the critically acclaimed World War II thriller DunkirkUnlike most pop stars who would probably prefer to cut their acting teeth in something light and easy-going, Styles landed a role in one of the biggest films of 2017, working with the notoriously meticulous Christopher Nolan.

Nolan’s attention to detail was quickly evident in thesign of timeThe singer’s first day on set, as he reveals in this exclusive new behind-the-scenes video.

“I remember the first day I got dressed and put on my uniform,” Styles explains, “and (Christopher Nolan) examined me. He looked at me and said, ‘Your boots are laced wrong.'”

“He explained that the British had made a loop rather than a cross. From that moment on, he set the precedent, so to speak: ‘I know what I mean.'”

In an awards season, Christopher Nolan can be counted on to receive his first Oscar nomination for Best Director. It’s true: Although he directed some of the biggest hits of the last decade, including The Dark Knight And StartNolan has been repeatedly overlooked by the Academy. That changes with Dunkirkhis summer hit, which recreates the decisive battle of the Second World War in remarkable detail.

This week, Nolan received his second Golden Globe nomination for Best Director for this film and appears to be the early favorite to win when those statuettes are awarded on January 7. Although Nolan doesn’t appear as one of the British soldiers fighting for survival on the beaches of Dunkirk, he still marched alongside them. “Chris would never ask anyone to do something without having done it himself,” notes Dunkirk cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, himself an Oscar favorite. “That kind of hands-on approach is very motivating for everyone.”
