Barcelona legend opens the door to a future role in the club: “That is one of my goals”

Barcelona have come a long way since the days when Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets dominated the midfield.

All three legends are no longer with the club and while the former enjoyed a successful time as manager of the club, the others are continuing their careers as professional footballers.

At 40, Iniesta still enjoys playing. After a stint at Vissel Kobe, the veteran currently plays for the Emirates Club in the United Arab Emirates and is nearing the end of his playing career.

In a recent interview with SPORT, the Barcelona legend commented on Xavi’s recent tenure and his departure from Barcelona earlier this year. He also gave an update on his future plans.

On the dismissal of Xavi

The World Cup-winning midfielder began by speaking about the special bond he has with Xavi and the tough summer the Spaniard has endured, particularly in light of the manner of his dismissal.

“Looking at it from the outside, it wasn’t easy in terms of the way things developed or turned out. The only thing you can say is that he is my friend and the situation as it arose was not the best.

“Nevertheless, it has happened and from now on everyone will look for the best. The club is for the club and we will soon see where Xavi can continue training,” he added, expressing optimism that both parties will find their feet in the future.

About his future

When Iniesta was then asked what he planned for the future and whether he wanted to become a coach like his friend Xavi, he replied:

“I’m just thinking about it, I don’t know anything yet. Yes, I’m thinking about getting my coaching license this year.”

“We will see if I can continue playing football or if I will have to stop my activity as a footballer. Let’s see what happens in the next few weeks,” he added about his immediate future.

Finally, the club legend was asked if he could imagine a future return to Barcelona in any capacity and he did not rule out the possibility.

“It will never change my feeling that I wish, and at some point in my life and career, the opportunity would arise to return to Barça. Because the context is good because everything is ready for it.”

“But today it makes no sense to talk about the what or the how, although of course I would like to.

My goal is to get the coaching title. Then we’ll see what happens, what life has in store for us and where we end up. That’s one of my goals.” he added.
