Over 16 Palestinians killed in Israeli attack

Doha, July 7 (UNI) – More than 16 Palestinians were killed and 50 injured in an Israeli attack on the school of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat refugee camp, the Gaza Health Ministry said in a statement seen by Sputnik on Sunday.

“Occupation forces have committed a new massacre at the UNRWA school in Nuseirat, where displaced persons had sought refuge. Over 16 dead and 50 injured were taken to Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital after the attack,” the ministry said in a letter.

The Hamas movement said on Telegram that its soldiers were not in the school at the time of the attack, adding that such places are constantly subjected to Israeli bombardment.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a large-scale rocket attack on Israel and breached the border, attacking both residential areas and military bases. The attack killed nearly 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped about 240 others. Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, and began a ground offensive into the Palestinian enclave with the stated goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. Up to 120 hostages are believed to still be held by Hamas in Gaza, and 43 hostages died in captivity.

As a result of Israeli military operations, more than 38,000 people were killed and over 87,400 others injured in the Gaza Strip, authorities said.
