Here is the situation on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

Battle

  • Russian artillery fire killed three civilians in Ukraine’s southern region of Kherson, officials said. Prosecutors said two bodies had been recovered from the rubble of a house that came under fire in a village near Beryslav. Meanwhile, the region’s governor, Oleksander Prokudin, said an evening artillery attack killed one person in a village south of Kherson.
  • Ukraine said its air defense systems had destroyed all 13 drones launched by Russia. The Air Force said in a statement on the messaging app Telegram that Russia had also launched two Iskander ballistic missiles, but did not provide any information on what happened to the weapons.

  • State news agencies, citing the Russian Defense Ministry, claimed that Iskander ballistic missiles destroyed two launch pads for Patriot surface-to-air missile systems in Ukraine’s Odessa region.

  • The Russian Defense Ministry said seven drones were intercepted over the Belgorod region, which is subjected to almost daily Ukrainian attacks.

  • Alexei Smirnov, governor of Kursk, further north and west, also reported that seven drones had been shot down over the region. He said Ukrainian forces had shelled about 10 villages during the day.
  • Meanwhile, the Ukrainian General Staff said Ukrainian and Russian forces had clashed 45 times near Pokrovsk the previous day. Hours later, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its troops had captured a village about 30 kilometers east of the city.
  • Ukrainian authorities said Russian attacks in northern Ukraine left around 100,000 households without electricity and cut off water supplies to a regional capital, while civilian casualties rose sharply in the country’s embattled east. The northern Sumy region, bordering Russia, was plunged into darkness after Russian attacks that began late Friday damaged energy infrastructure, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said.

  • The Ukrainian Air Force tricked Russian troops into using missiles against sophisticated dummy weapons and military equipment designed as military targets, said its commander Mykola Oleshchuk. A video attached to his Telegram post, described as footage from a Russian reconnaissance drone, showed Russian Iskander missiles attacking the simulated weapons, Oleshchuk said.
