Ireland’s Eurovision entry Bambie Thug gives update on the problem that led to rehearsal failure

Bambie Thug, Ireland’s Eurovision entry, has confirmed the “problem” that caused them to miss the final rehearsal before the grand final, which begins at 8pm tonight. Bambie Thug have said they made “several complaints” to Eurovision Song Contest organisers about a commentator from the Israeli broadcast delegation after missing pre-final rehearsals on Saturday.

In an Instagram story this evening, May 11, they wrote: “I have made several complaints to the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) about incidents I experienced this week. This morning they confirmed to my delegation, before the others, that the KAN commentator violated the rules of conduct during the Eurovision semi-final.

“I have been waiting patiently to hear what action the EBU will take following this breach of rules. I have since seen a statement from EBU Director General Noel Curran contradicting this earlier confirmation. I am still waiting for an official update from the EBU.”

They said today that they had missed their dress rehearsal due to a “situation” that required the “urgent attention” of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

In their Instagram story, they wrote: “Dear Coven, there was a situation while we were waiting to go on stage for the Flag Parade rehearsal and I felt that this situation needed urgent attention from the EBU. The EBU has taken this matter seriously and we have discussed what actions need to be taken.

“This meant I missed my dress rehearsal – I’m really sorry for the fans who came to see me. I hope to see you on stage tonight.”

A spokesperson for the European Broadcasting Union said: “Bambie Thug did not perform at the third dress rehearsal, and footage of her performance at the second dress rehearsal was used instead.”

“They missed the dress rehearsal due to a situation that is currently being discussed with the EBU and the organisers of the Song Contest. We hope that this will be resolved soon and that Bambie Thug will perform in the grand final show as planned.”

The Israeli delegation at the Eurovision Song Contest has responded to allegations made by the Irish band Bambie Thug against a member of their commentary team.

When asked about Bambie’s Instagram post, a spokesman for Israeli broadcaster Kan told the PA news agency: “We wish everyone the best of luck tonight.”

The grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest will be broadcast at 8pm on BBC One.
