Some of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous dresses go under the hammer in Los Angeles

Some of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous dresses go under the hammer in Los Angeles

An ensemble worn by Hollywood film star Marilyn Monroe in one of her most famous roles has sold at auction for $280,000 (£216,000).

The star wore the black silk bandeau top, floor-length floral skirt and oversized straw hat in the 1954 comedy “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”

It was one of numerous items that once belonged to Monroe and went under the hammer at an auction in Beverly Hills.

The actress’s floor-length, long-sleeved, sequined red silk dress, worn in the 1953 comedy Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, fetched $250,000 (£193,000).

A bright yellow, floor-length period dress worn by Monroe in the final scene of the 1954 drama River Of No Return sold for $175,000 (£135,000).

And a black silk crepe cocktail dress, believed to be the same one she wore at a press conference promoting the film Some Like It Hot in July 1958, sold for $100,000 (£77,000).

Monroe was 36 when she died of a drug overdose in Los Angeles in 1962. She remains one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars to this day.

Other highlights of the auction, conducted by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, include an Italian-style, ornate carved wood corner chair worn by the star during her final photo shoot in July 1962.

It sold for just over $80,000, about £61,000.

And a brown and olive-green striped sofa that was in the office of Monroe’s psychiatrist Dr Ralph Greenson when he treated her sold for $11,250 (£8,700), well above its $1,000 (£775) estimate.

The collection consisted of 115 items from Monroe, all of which were sold with no reserve bid.

Although some of the successful bids were eye-catching, they fell far short of the record for a Monroe garment.

In 2016, Julien’s Auctions auctioned the dress Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday Mr President” to John F. Kennedy for $4.8 million (£3.7 million).
