Chris Evans is “proud” of his scar after skin cancer removal

Chris Evans has said he loves his “proud scar” after having his melanoma removed because it has given him “sunnier tomorrows”.

The 58-year-old broadcaster was diagnosed with skin cancer in August last year and, thanks to an early diagnosis, was cancer-free eight weeks later.

Speaking to a dermatologist on his Virgin Radio show as part of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, he said: “I now have a scar that you can see. It’s on the back of my calf.”

“I love my scar because it has led me to a sunnier future, and that future is where I am today, and it is a wonderful place.”

He added: “My dermatologist says that from now on I have to wear a skin protector whenever I have exposed skin because I am so vulnerable.

“This is the first summer I had skin cancer – thank God I don’t have it anymore and I just cover it up now.

“We’re going on holiday on Sunday, we’re going to Portugal. And my long-sleeved UV shirts have arrived, we tried them on last night. Is everything OK? I want to go swimming with the kids.”

When asked how he feels about the sun today, he said: “People who get a really good tan are obviously not as afraid of the sun as someone like me.

“Strangely enough, I’m not as scared now as I was for years because I’m forewarned and know what to do.

“In a way, I’m relieved. I’ve come to terms with it, if you will.”

In August 2023, Evans told listeners of his British breakfast show Virgin Radio that he had been diagnosed with early-stage skin cancer and that he had caught the disease quickly, making it “as treatable as cancer can be”.

The following month, he announced that he had given the all-clear eight weeks after the diagnosis.
