A 34-year-old woman has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her 13-month-old child, who died of a fentanyl overdose, authorities said.

According to the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office, Gabrielle Marshall will serve 11.5 years in prison, followed by 10 years probation.

On September 19, 2022, Scottsdale police officers responded to a 911 call regarding a child who had ingested fentanyl, according to a press release from the MCAO.

Marshall was the only adult in the house that day “and admitted that her child had fallen under her opiates.”

“Officers found drug paraphernalia in various locations throughout Marshall’s home. The child was cold to the touch, had been administered Narcan, and was pronounced dead at the hospital,” the press release said.

Marshall pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse in April.

“Losing a child is an immense agony, but knowing that child is gone because of her own addiction is something this mother will have to live with for the rest of her life,” said Maricopa County District Attorney Rachel Mitchell.
