“Red Solo Cup” singer Toby Keith died “peacefully” on Monday evening. The 62-year-old country singer, who was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2022, died “surrounded by his family,” according to a opinion posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“He fought his battle with grace and courage,” the statement said read. “Please respect his family’s privacy at this time.”

Keith leaves behind his wife Tricia and his children: his daughters Krystal and Shelley and his son Stelen.

Keith publicly announced his cancer diagnosis on social media in June 2022. At the time, the “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” singer said he had “undergone six months of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.”

“So far, so good,” he wrote. “I need time to breathe, recover and relax.”

Keith spoke about his battle with cancer at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards. He told E! News it was “a bit like a rollercoaster ride. You have good days and then it goes up and down, up and down… It’s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero, but today I feel good.”

What is stomach cancer?

Stomach cancer, also called gastric carcinoma, is typically slow-growing and develops over time. Although it’s unclear what type of stomach cancer Keith was battling, about 95 percent of stomach cancer cases are adenocarcinoma.

Adenocarcinomas arise in the glandular cells of the mucosa, the innermost lining of the stomach. There are several types of cancer that arise in the stomach, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, and gastric lymphomas.

What are the symptoms of stomach cancer?

According to My Gut Feeling (the Canadian Stomach Cancer Foundation), the following symptoms of stomach cancer may occur:

  • Weight loss

  • Flatulence

  • reduced appetite

  • difficulties swallowing

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort

  • fatigue

  • Nausea and vomiting (vomit looks like “coffee grounds”)

  • Changes in bowel movements (consistency, frequency)

  • Blood in the soil, dark/black intestine, foul-smelling stool

  • Accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites)

  • Anemia (tiredness, feeling weak)

  • Heartburn or indigestion

Risk factors for stomach cancer

Although the exact cause is unclear, there are several factors that can increase your risk of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is usually diagnosed in people over 60 and is more common in men than women.

Alcohol and tobacco consumption also increase the risk of stomach cancer and infection with the bacteria H pylori (Helicobacter pylori). H pylori can cause inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis) and lead to stomach ulcers. My Gut Feeling points out that the bacteria changes the cells in the stomach, which can lead to the development of cancer – but not always.

People whose diets are high in salt and red meat, as well as people with blood type A, have an increased risk of developing stomach cancer, although it is unclear why.

A family history of stomach cancer and previous stomach surgery can also increase your risk of stomach cancer.

Stomach cancer in Canada

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 4,100 Canadians are diagnosed with stomach cancer each year.

The survival rate for stomach cancer varies depending on the type and stage of the cancer. About 29 percent of people in Canada diagnosed with stomach cancer survive at least five years.

There is currently no routine screening for stomach cancer. See your doctor if you have a family history of stomach cancer or if you are concerned about your health.
