Israel marks nine months of war, Gaza hostages remain trapped

Thousands of protesters gathered on Saturday evening demanding the return of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, Israeli media reported. Four people were also arrested.

Particularly notable was a large protest in Tel Aviv that temporarily paralyzed traffic on the Ayalon highway.

After a few minutes, the police dispersed the protest with the help of water cannons.

Protesters also gathered in numerous locations across Israel, including the central protest site of Tel Aviv, as well as other cities and towns such as Jerusalem, Haifa, Caesarea, Emek Hefer and Karkur.

Protesters at the Karkur junction and many other protest sites on Saturday dedicated the demonstration to the twelve women held hostage by Hamas.

Fear of pregnant hostages

Some carried signs reading “A girl gave birth to a girl in captivity,” while the hostages spent nine months in captivity. Other protesters demanded elections.

Ynet reported that about 2,000 protesters demonstrated in Caesarea, demanding a hostage deal and immediate new elections.

A mass march with representatives of several protest organizations also took place in Haifa, also demanding elections.

Arrests

According to Israeli media, police in Tel Aviv arrested two protesters suspected of disturbing public order. Police said some protesters tried to block the road and set fires. Two others were arrested during protests in Jerusalem.

A statement from Israel police said a number of protesters “illegally gathered on Menachem Begin Street and marched toward the northbound exit of Route 20 at the Arlozorov Intersection. They attempted to block the road and disrupt public order while setting fires on the street.”

“In view of the misdemeanors committed by a handful of demonstrators, the police had to declare an illegal demonstration, during which two suspects were arrested.”
