Kevin Bacon has a direct answer to a sequel to Footloose Legacy

Summary

  • Kevin Bacon does not want to go to his
    Unbound
    Role.
  • He believes
    Unbound
    should remain a unique narrative.
  • The original film and its legacy remain popular today.

Kevin Bacon recently answered the question of whether a delayed return to one of his most popular roles would be an option. Unbound is still one of the actor’s most famous roles, and while he not only reprised his role in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Fbut horror sequel MaXXXineThe film has been mentioned several times. This is hardly surprising considering that his role as Ren McCormack in Footloose is one of his most iconic performances of the 80s.

Bacon has been quite vocal in the past about reprising his role as Valentine McKee from Tremble (which was filmed in 1989). But when it comes to Unboundhe wants to leave the legacy of the film exactly where it is. In a conversation with CinemaBlend, the topic of a Unbound When the conversation turned to reviving his legacy, the beloved actor’s response was perhaps the most blunt one could wish for.

Bacon went on to say that the intellectual property is not limited to the original 1984 film. He referenced the remake, but there was also a successful stage musical based on the film. In Bacon’s words:

I mean, they made another Footloose. I don’t think many people have seen it, but they made another Footloose. I’m not that interested… I don’t know. I think this one (Beverly Hills Cop) makes a lot more sense.

Unbound is a less sequel-friendly work than Beverly Hills Copor Tremblefor that matter. In fact, Bacon did again his role as Tremble‘ McKee in a 2018 TV series, but several networks, including Syfy, oddly turned it down. So it’s not that Bacon is generally against reprising his most iconic roles, he just believes (rightly) that Unbound is a single story and should be left as such.

Kevin Bacon may be four decades older, but he can probably still get it going. However, seeing his Footloose audition video was a “rad” moment.

The original film is still widely shown on television, not to mention its presence on streaming services, so anyone wanting to get a taste of McCormack’s story and the music that fuels it has plenty of opportunity to do so. And that’s not even counting the underrated 2011 remake (which made a profit at the box office) or the stage version that has been performed around the world for over 25 years.

In other words, some things are better left as they are. And Unbound is apparently one of those things. It’s a product of its time in the best sense, and a legacy sequel project would only hurt its still-present power. Anyway, if anyone wants to see Bacon dance, they can just go to his Instagram.
