Creator of God of War criticizes Atreus as “terrible”

God of War Creator David Jaffe is not a big fan of Atreus, having recently called Kratos’ son a “consistently terrible character.” His comments echo some of the previous criticisms fans have made about the latest God of War games.

Originally introduced in 2018 God of War Reboot, Kratos’ son was also prominently featured throughout 2022 God of War RagnarokAnd while in his first game he was used primarily as a companion character, in the immediate sequel everything was done to give him more of a focus and he was given several independent sections accordingly. God of War Ragnarok ultimately offered some memorable Atreus moments, but not everyone was a fan of its gameplay segments and story beats.

Jaffe admitted that he liked the idea of ​​Kratos having a son, but was ultimately disappointed when the execution of that premise failed to portray Atreus as someone who is “cool” and leaves the player thinking, “I want to be that guy.” Ragnarok. Although the concept of passing the baton between the main characters of a franchise often results in the outgoing protagonist becoming less interesting, the series’ creator hinted that he still finds Kratos far more exciting than his son.

Despite this, Jaffe claimed that not every single fictional character had to be an “adult literary fiction character” who is “completely different” by the end of their story, comparing Kratos to iconic heroes like Spider-Man and Superman, who don’t often go through radical arcs but still carry their respective franchises forward.


Although he has some complaints about Atreus, Jaffe is not entirely critical of the newer series entries. He has therefore previously God of War Reboot as an interesting mix of ideas and said he enjoyed playing it.
