A modest, improvised bouquet of flowers marked the spot in Hampton Park Plaza on Saturday morning where a 28-year-old Ottawa man was shot and killed the previous evening.

In a brief press release, Ottawa police said the shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday. The dead man is Adam Abdullahi Elmi of Ottawa.

No suspects are in custody and no further details have been released.

Kevin Patel, the owner of the Fat Bastard Burrito restaurant in Hampton Park Plaza, the shopping center at the corner of Carling and Kirkwood avenues, said Elmi was among the customers at his restaurant shortly before the shooting.

“He came into our store with a friend,” said Patel, who was working Friday, albeit in the back of his shop. “He went outside and someone shot him.”

Police have asked Patel’s business and his neighbors for surveillance video and are also asking for footage from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident.

Nadhila Setiawan, who works at Hampton Paints, the store next to Patel’s, said she was in the back of the paint store on Friday when she heard several loud noises at the front.

“I thought someone knocked on the window,” she said.

She soon noticed the commotion outside, including a man lying on the sidewalk being tended to by passersby. Setiawan said she heard a woman call 911 and say she saw a gunman run toward a white car, which sped away.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Ottawa police posted that they and emergency responders were called to the square at around 6:09 p.m. They found the victim, who suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, where he died soon after.

By Saturday morning, the crime scene tape had been removed, leaving nothing to be seen except for a few faint marks on the sidewalk where the victim had been lying and a few tied-up yellow flowers.

The fatal shooting in the square was the second in Ottawa in as many Fridays. A week earlier, Yousef Salaman, 19, was killed in a shooting in the 1700 block of Russell Road, which is near the intersection of Smyth Road and St. Laurent Boulevard in east Ottawa.

Police are seeking information on both shootings. Anyone with information should contact the Homicide Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 5493. Anonymous tips can be made toll-free to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at crimestoppers.ca.
